Planning in Existing Buildings: Design of a Digital Toolkit + a Serious Game

During the seminar, we would like to jointly develop a concept and a structure for a toolkit and a serious game for the planning process in heritage buildings.

Planning and construction processes are standardised to a very high degree and are mainly described by the service phases of the Fee Structure for Architects and Engineers (HOAI) as well as the Construction Contract Procedures (VOB). Building on this, numerous specific and much more detailed provisions regulate the development steps as soon as public clients are involved.

It is important to have a basic understanding of structures and interdependencies, because it is not a matter of linear processes, but rather a kind of matrix that contains forward and backward steps and whose effectiveness depends very much on how much it is also understood as a set of instruments. Essentially, it needs to be understood when which decisions are to be made in which scaling, when decision variants are essential and when, if necessary, steps backwards make sense. The understanding of structures and the knowledge of possible decision scenarios generates the freedom of action that the new generation needs for the upcoming transformation or renewal of the construction industry, for the so-called construction turnaround.

The digital toolkit is an abstract representation of the determinants, variables and fields of action of a planning process with the aim of learning and testing decision-making scenarios independently. It combines elementary knowledge, process dynamics with exercise components and provides a basis for discussion in teaching. The new serious game to be developed makes it possible to check the chosen decisions and explains reasons for success or failure.
