Serial Buildings: A History of Experiments

The seminar deals with the background that led to the development of serial building and analyses the post-war buildings exhibited in the museum in this context. Serial building is once again taking up a lot of space in the current discussion and the seminar presents the history and experiments associated with it and thus perhaps also stimulates new ideas.

The seminar "Serial construction in the post-war period" is intended to provide an insight into the history of serial construction. For this purpose, an excursion to the LVR Open Air Museum Kommern will take place:
On the museum grounds, there are four assemblies separated from each other by wooded areas, corresponding to the four regions of the Rhineland (Eifel, Westerwald, Lower Rhine and Bergisches Land).

Since 2012, the museum's fifth group of buildings, the "Marktplatz Rheinland" (Rhineland Marketplace), has been dedicated to the period from 1945 onwards and shows the urbanisation of rural areas, combined with the dissolution of traditional rural townscapes. Serial building is a central theme here, since especially after the Second World War, hopes were set on prefabricated houses, for example, to make up for the lack of living space caused by the destruction of the war. Thus, the architecture of the prefabricated house has shaped the image of many German suburbs and settlements in the Rhineland since the end of World War II.

This process is demonstrated in the new group of buildings by the Nissenhütten from the immediate post-war period, the Diaspora Chapel by Otto Bartning from the 1950s, the Quelle prefabricated house from the 1960s and the asylum containers from the 1990s.
